Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus in Parliament, Sri Lanka

 

Introduction

 

The Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus was established in 06th Parliament and held its inaugural meeting on 06 April 2006 and lapsed with the dissolution of the 06th Parliament.  

 

The Caucus was again established in the present Parliament and held its inaugural meeting on 07 October 2010.

 

All 13 women Parliamentarians are members of the Caucus. The Hon (Mrs.) Sumedha G Jayasena, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, is the Chairperson of the Caucus while the Hon (Mrs.) Chandrani Bandara Jayasinghe, MP, acts as Vice Chairperson.  Below is the name list of the Members of the Caucus.

Objective 

 

Empowerment of women and elimination of all sorts of violence and harassments against them

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Terms of Reference

 

 

  • Increasing the participation of women in politics
  • Safeguarding women’s rights and gender equality
  • Preventing all sorts of violations and harassments against women
  • Looking into the welfare of the women workers including the migrant workers
  • Poverty alleviation among underprivileged women & widows and providing them with vocational training  and facilities
  • Improving education among women  
  • Looking into the health related problems of the women
  • Providing legal aids and counseling
  • Enacting legislation for the betterment of the   women
  • Contributing to the development of the country in general

 

Activities

 

  • Advocacy through Parliament
  • Coordinated activities with the women Provincial Councilors and Members of the Local Government Bodies
  • Coordinated activities with Government Ministries, Departments and Institutions
  • Awareness programmes, workshops, trainings and conferences
  • Outreach activities at district levels
  • Coordinated activities with UN Agencies
  • Partnership with local women   organizations and professionals.
  • Cooperation with other Parliament women   organizations and international women organizations
