How Parliament Works

Unless Parliament otherwise decides, the Parliament shall meet in two alternate weeks in each month commencing after the first Sunday and shall sit on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays of the first and the third of such weeks in terms of the provisions stipulated in the Standing Order 8(1) of the Parliament.
However, Parliament shall meet for twenty-six days to consider the Appropriation Bill under the provisions of the Standing Order 75 of the Parliament. These allotted days may be reduced with the approval on a Business Motion duly passed by Parliament.
The hours of sittings of Parliament on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays are from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and from 1.00 p.m. to 5.30 p.m., effective from 22nd August, 2023 on a Business Motion approved by the Parliament 22nd August 2023.
Accordingly, Parliament meets as follows:-

1.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. | |

(Lunch interval will be from 12.30 p.m. to 1.00 p.m.)
On Wednesdays of the first sitting week of each month, a half-an-hour from the Question Hour has been allocated to take up Prime Minister’s Questions. Accordingly, the Question Hour consists as follows:-
