0533/ 2018 - Question Asked By Hon. Vasudeva Nanayakkara, M.P.

    1. 2010/’17

      Hon. Vasudeva Nanayakkara,—To ask the Minister of Industry and Commerce,—

      (a) Will he inform this House—

      (i) whether he is aware of the fact that “ Neelawala” in Kandy district is an ancient village where traditional jewellery industry  flourished;

      (ii) whether he admits that out of the families that depended on gold and silver jewellry industry, only 03 families engage in that industry by now;

      (iii) whether he admits that the industrialists in this village are of the view that despite the huge demand that prevailed in the past for gold and silver jewellry produced in “Neelawala” with the intervention of Laksala to uplift the domestic industrialists, this industry has suffered a severe setback as Lakasala has become an institution of a few businessmen; and

      (iv) whether the government would intervene and take steps to uplift the gold and silver jewellry industry of “Neelawala village” where ancient designs are used for carving?

      (b) If not why?
