Hon. (Dr.) (Mrs.) Sudarshini Fernandopulle,— To ask the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Resettlement of Protracted Displaced Persons, Cooperative Development and Vocational Training and Skills Development,—
(a) Will he inform this House—
(i) the measures taken by the government to develop the roofing tile industry which is the direct or indirect livelihood of hundreds of thousands of people and is also a 100% local industry;
(ii) whether he is aware that this industry has experienced a rapid decline;
(iii) the fate that would befall the roofing tile manufacturers who are local industrialists and the employees working in tile manufactories due to the collapse of this industry;
(iv) whether he is aware that the government institutions purchase asbestos sheets granting duty concessions to multinational companies that produce asbestos sheets; and
(v) the state patronage extended to local clay roofing tile manufacturers as of now?
(b) If not, why?
