      Hon. Charles Nirmalanathan,— To ask the Minister of Environment,—

      (a) Is he aware  that—

      (i) institutions like Hammersmith Lanka, Orient Minerals, Sanuur Minerals, Hillsite Exploration, Supreme Solutions and the GSMB technical services private limited  have been authorized to conduct research  regarding Ilmenite mining in the islands of the Mannar district;

      (ii) it has been officially announced that the Australian company by the name of Titanic Sands Ltd has been licensed for Ilmenite mining  in the Mannar island and is  supposed to initiate excavation activities expeditiously;

      (iii) 20 containers of sand extracted from Pesale village of Mannar island have been sent to South Africa for research purposes; and

      (iv) there is an impending threat over the  destruction of the said island as a result of sand mining  as no elevation above  sea level is usually  seen  in the Mannar island?

      (b) Will he inform this House whether steps will be taken to prevent sand mining in the Mannar island?

      (c) If not, why?
