Hon. M. W. D. Sahan Pradeep Withana,— To ask the Minister of Transport and Highways,—
(a) Will he inform this House—
(i) whether he admits that an extensive number of road accidents take place in Sri Lanka presently; and
(ii) of the number of road accidents taken place near Indigahamula junction in Colombo-Kandy main road during the last five years and of the number of persons who lost lives due to the above accidents separately corresponding to each year?
(b) Is he aware that—
(i) there is an entrance way to Colombo-Kandy main road from Weboda direction;
(ii) the vehicles entering the main road from Weboda road are heading towards Kandy or Colombo directions;
(iii) that a large number of accidents have taken place in the pedestrian crossing found in the above place;
(iv) the location of both the above pedestrian crossing and the entrance way in the same point has caused the above situation; and
(v) no action has been taken so far, despite notifications were given in this regard since many years?
(c) Will he also inform this House of the measures that will be taken to prevent the occurrence of road accidents at the above mentioned place and to minimizing the loss of lives and property?
(d) If not, why?
