      Hon. Akila Viraj Kariyawasam,— To ask the Minister of Health,—

      (a) Will he state —

      (i) whether there is a procedure for selecting drugs when pharmaceuticals are imported to Sri Lanka;

      (ii) if so, what the aforesaid procedure is;

      (iii) the names of companies that have been registered under the Ministry of Health at present for importing pharmaceuticals;

      (iv) whether the pharmaceuticals imported by the aforesaid companies are subjected to a quality check in Sri Lanka; and

      (v) if so, as to how the aforesaid checking is conducted?

      (b) Will he inform this House of—

      (i) the method adopted to determine the date of expiration in pharmaceuticals that are imported to Sri Lanka;

      (ii) the period of time within which pharmaceuticals should be imported to Sri Lanka from the date of manufacture;

      (iii) the reasons for the reports that were made on discovering expired drugs in government hospitals through out the recent past; and

      (iv) the quantity and the value of drugs that had to be removed from government hospitals in the past year due to expiration?

      (c) If not, why?
