Hon. Rajiva Wijesinha,— To ask the Minister of Education,—
(a) Is he aware that —
(i) Prof. Gunapala Nanayakkara, Director General of National Institute of Education, had been interdicted from the post of Head, International Centre of Post Graduate Institute of Management in Dubai due to some financial irregularities done by him; and
(ii) a report has been prepared by Ernst & Young Advisory Services (Pvt.) Ltd, pertaining to the said irregularities highlighting the withdrawal of Rs. 17.3 million from the PIM Account in Dubai using ATMs and also en-cashing or depositing of seven cheques amounting to Rs. 5.6 million into his account without being produced payment vouchers and making a difference of Rs. 35.3 million against the amounts received from students and the amounts banked?
(b) Will he state—
(i) on what basis Prof. Nanayakkara was appointed to the post of DG of NIE; and
(ii) whether it is ensured that similar practices as of (a)(ii) will not be taken place in NIE headed by him?
(c) If not, why?
