Hon. Buddhika Pathirana,— To ask the Minister of Rural Economic Affairs,—
(a) Is he aware that—
(i) farmers do not get a reasonable price for the vegetables that they bring to the Dambulla Dedicated Economic Centre;
(ii) extortionists and middlemen dupe the farmers; and
(iii) extortionists operate with political backing?
(b) Will he state —
(i) whether a course of action has been formulated for ensuring a reasonable price to farmer at the above Economic Centre;
(ii) if so, what that course of action is;
(iii) whether the government has acted to combat the extortionists operating in the Centre; and
(iv) if so, in what manner?
(c) Will he inform this House —
(i) what the objectives and aims of establishing this Centre were; and
(ii) whether that objectives and aims have been achieved?
(d) Will he also inform this House—
(i) how many trade stalls are available in the Centre referred to above;
(ii) what the names and addresses of their owners are;
(iii) how much does the government charge the owners as taxes;
(iv) whether he is aware that the stalls have been sub-leased;
(v) if so, whether he admits that sub-leasing is illegal; and
(vi) why eviction was carried out in respect of the two trade stalls allotted for the farmers’ organizations and farmers’ co-operative society?
(e) If not, why?
