Parliamentary Caucuses
A Parliamentary caucus is a group of members of a Parliament who meet to discuss and advocate for common interests/goals or pursue a shared agenda.
The primary purposes of a caucus is to coordinate actions, discuss policy issues, strategies on legislative priorities, etc . They often focus on specific identified issues/topics such as the environment, human rights, economic development or particular demographic groups (ex: Women's Caucus, Youth Caucus, Children Caucus etc.).
Caucus activities can include holding regular meetings, organizing events, proposing legislation, suggestions, discussing current issues engaging with stakeholders, the public and etc.
Following are the current caucuses in the Ninth Parliament of Sri Lanka:
1 Women Parliamentarians Caucus
2 Parliamentary Caucus for Children
3 The Parliamentary Caucus for Open Parliament Initiative
4 Parliamentary Caucus for Youth
5 Parliamentary Caucus for Animal Welfare
6 Parliamentary Caucus for functioning towards safeguarding National Heritage
7 Parliamentary Caucus for Persons with Disabilities
8 Parliamentary Caucus for Protection of Hill Country
9 Parliamentary Caucus for Human Rights
10 Parliamentary Caucus for the evolution of the Malaiyaga Plantation Community
in Sri Lanka
11 Caucus on Climate Parliament of Sri Lanka
12 Caucus of Medical Parliamentarians Sri Lanka
However, provisions for Parliamentary Caucuses are not included in the Standing Orders of the Democratic Socialists Republic of Sri Lanka.
