Hon. S. M. Marikkar,— To ask the Minister of Health, Nutrition & Indigenous Medicine,—
(a) Is he aware—
(i) that from 2004 onwards, the people residing in the area adjoining Sisili Hanaro (Pvt) Ltd. in Mulleriyawa suffer owing to the smoke resulted by the combustion of chemical waste of the hospitals of the Western province throughout the 24 hours;
(ii) that the requirements stipulated by the World Health Organization(WHO) have not been met when this company was established;
(iii) that the recommendation of the Regional Medical officer of Health has not been obtained with pertinence to getting the license of the Central Environmental Authority; and
(iv) the conditions laid down in the license are severely violated?
(b) Will he inform this House—
(i) whether a proper evaluation which has been done through a scientific study on the environmental pollution which causes health hazards to the people of the area is available in this regard;
(ii) of the steps that have been taken by the Minister of Health, Nutrition & Indigenous Medicine in view of minimizing the inconveniences caused to the people;
(iii) if not, of the short term and long term measures that can be taken to put an end to this trouble;
(iv) whether it is possible to establish a centre for the combustion of the clinical waste in Sri Lanka as per the criteria stipulated by the WHO;
(v) whether the relevant plans have been formulated by the government by now; and
(vi) if so, of the date on which it will be implemented?
(c) If not, why?
