0384/ 2023 - Question Asked By Hon. Wasantha Yapabandara, Attorney at Law, M.P.

    1. 384/2023

Hon. Wasantha Yapabandara, Attorney at Law,— To ask the Minister of                Irrigation,—

      (a) Is he aware that—

      (i) the maximum water storage capacity of Victoria reservoir had been 723 million cubic metres by 2021 and that it had come down to 428 million cubic metres by the end of January 2022; and

(ii) a crack in the middle of Mahaweli river has caused rapid decrease of water in that reservoir?

      (b) Will he inform this House—

      (i) whether an investigation would be conducted regarding the rapid decline of the water capacity of Mahaweli river; and

(ii) whether steps will be taken to conduct an annual water audit at reservoir level?

      (c) Will he also inform this House whether he admits that obtaining water required for cultivation on timely basis could become a problem as a result of drying up/evaporation of water in rivers owing to the use of water in rivers mostly for hydro electricity generation?

      (d) If not, why?
