Hon. Akila Viraj Kariyawasam,— To ask the Minister of Economic Development,—
(a) Is he aware that there is a plan to abolish the Samurdhi assistance to the present recipients who are above 70 years of age as a programme has been designed to provide them with a monthly allowance of Rs. 1,000.00 ?
(b) Will he inform this House—
(i) of the total amount of money spent by the government monthly on giving the Samurdhi assistance to citizens who are over 70 years of age;
(ii) whether approval has been granted to cut off the Samurdhi assistance given at present due to the payment of the aforesaid allowance of Rs. 1,000.00; and
(iii) whether action will be taken to provide the Samurdhi assistance and Public assistance together with the aforesaid allowance of Rs. 1,000.00 instead of cutting off the Samurdhi assistance due to the payment of the aforesaid allowance ?
(c) If not, why ?
