Hon. P. Harrison,— To ask the Minister of Wildlife Resources Conservation,—
(a) Will he state—
(i) the number of wild elephant protection electric fences that have been built in Sri Lanka up to now;
(ii) the total length of the said electric fences;
(iii) the steps taken for the maintenance of those fences; and
(iv) the gross expenditure on the construction and maintenance of one kilometer of an electric fence, separately?
(b) Will he inform this House with respect to the last five years of the —
(i) number of wild elephant protection electric fences constructed;
(ii) length of each of those electric fences separately;
(iii) number of human lives, wild elephants and the value of property lost in each year due to the elephant-human conflict separately; and
(iv) amount of compensation paid by the government for the aforesaid damages?
(c) Will he admit that—
(i) despite the protective measures taken as mentioned above, there has been an increase in the loss of human and elephant lives and damages to property; and
(ii) therefore it is desirable to adopt alternative methods different from the said methods?
(d) If so, will he disclose to this House the alternative method relevant to (c)(ii) above?
(e) If not, why?
