Hon. Dunesh Gankanda,— To ask the Minister of Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare,—
(a) Will he state—
(i) the top ten Middle East countries from which the Sri Lankan immigrant workers bring the highest amount of foreign exchange earning;
(ii) separately, the number of Sri Lankans (approximately) employed in each of the aforesaid countries;
(iii) whether Sri Lankan embassies are available in all of the aforesaid countries;
(iv) separately, the numbers of translators and labour officers serving in each of the aforesaid embassies; and
(v) whether he admits that a sufficient staff has not been deployed to serve in the embassies when compared with the number of Sri Lankan workers employed in those countries?
(b) Will he inform this House—
(i) whether a systematic procedure has been formulated to inform the Sri Lankan embassies when Sri Lankan workers are arrested by the police in those countries; and
(ii) whether he admits that the Sri Lankan migrant workers who happen to encounter legal issues are bestowed with the opportunity to seek refuge from the embassies through the formulation of such a procedure by signing MOUs between Sri Lanka and the aforesaid countries?
(c) If not, why?
