Hon. P. Harrison,— To ask the Minister of Agriculture,—
(a) Will he inform this House —
(i) of the qualifications one should possess to hold the Office of Registrar of Pesticides;
(ii) whether there is a specific time duration for one to hold the aforesaid office; and
(iii) of the salary paid for the aforesaid Office?
(b) Will he also inform this House—
(i) of the number of types of pesticides of which the importation has been suspended for the period of next two years by the Registrar of Pesticides on grounds that they “can cause the kidney disease”;
(ii) of the names of the pesticides which the World Health Organization, too, has asked Sri Lanka to suspend importation;
(iii) of the year in which the importation of the pesticides, which the World Health Organization had asked the country not to import, commenced;
(iv) whether he is aware that the pesticides which have been banned by the government are imported under different names; and
(v) if so, of the legal action that will be taken against the companies which are engaged in such illegal acts?
(c) If not, why?
