Hon. Akila Viraj Kariyawasam,— To ask the Minister of Minor Export Crop Promotion,—
(a) Will he state—
(i) the approximate number of betel cultivators in Sri Lanka;.
(ii) the areas in which betel is cultivated the most;
(iii) the major betel exporting countries; and
(iv) the amount of foreign exchange earned annually through exporting betel?
(b) Will he inform this House—
(i) whether action will be taken to provide fertilizer on concessionary basis to the betel cultivators;
(ii) whether studies have been conducted to introduce a suitable methodology to minimize fluctuations that occur in the price of betel within very short periods of time in the local market;
(iii) whether research is carried out regarding cultivation of betel; and
(iv) if so, of the major findings and recommendations made recently regarding the advancement of betel cultivations through such research?
(c) If not, why?
