      Hon. Kanaka Herath,— To ask the Minister of Higher Education and             Highways,—

      (a) Will he inform this House —

      (i) whether the development work on the 26 kilometer-long road from the town of Mawanella to Gampola through Hemmathagama which was proposed to be carpeted and developed has been limited to reach only up to the location of the Al Azhar College of Hijaragama, i.e., only to 15k.m.;

      (ii) whether the width of the aforesaid road which had been initially planned to be 40 feet, has been reduced to 34 feet;

      (iii) whether changing the original plans of the aforesaid road in this manner would provide solutions to the traffic congestion which ocurrs daily at the turn to Hemmathagama from the Mawanella town (the junction near the S.O. Hotel) of the Colombo-Kandy road; and

      (iv) If not, whether an alternative will be proposed to minimize traffic congestion at this location?

      (b) If not, why?
