Hon. Prasanna Ranaweera,— To ask the Minister of Women and Child Affairs,—
(a) Is she aware that—
(i) the co-operative societies system operates as a public institution with an island-wide network that provides quality goods; and
(ii) the co-operative societies system is used as a key institution to provide aid to the public in disaster situations?
(b) Will she admit that—
(i) the ‘bag of nutritious food’ programme in operation for pregnant mothers is implemented through co-operative societies as well as other institutions;
(ii) a larger number of people could be provided benefits if the said programme was implemented only through co-operative societies; and
(iii) the revenue of co-operative societies could also be enhanced through that?
(c) Will she inform this House of—
(i) the monetary value of assistance distributed by now through co-operative societies and other institutions under the said project; and
(ii) the reason for implementing this programme of providing a bag of nutritious food through other private institutions when it is possible to implement the same island-wide providing benefits to a larger number of people through the co-operative societies system which operates with government involvement and proper supervision?
(d) If not, why?
