Hon. Bimal Rathnayake,— To ask the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation ,—
(a) Is he aware that —
(i) an annual lease amount is charged from the residents who have been residing in the lands belonging to the Department of Railways in Haputale for over 75 years up to now;
(ii) the annual lease amount which stood at Rs.75/- – Rs.80/- in 1970 has been increased up to Rs.10,000/- – Rs.25,000/- at present;
(iii) while people who are residing in one part of the land have been awarded through deeds the title to the lands they are residing in, some others who are residing in another part of the same land have been required to pay a lease amount; and
(iv) they have been asked to vacate their lands if they do not pay the lease?
(b) Will he inform this House —
(i) whether steps will be taken to reduce the lease amount that is currently charged from the aforesaid persons who have been residing in those lands since 1930; and
(ii) whether necessary steps will be taken to grant those lands to the persons who are residing in them?
(c) If not, why?
