    1. 1607/’17

      Hon. (Prof.) Ashu Marasinghe – To ask the Minister of Power and Renewable Energy,—

      (a) Will he inform this House—

      (i) whether the government has taken a decision to use Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) to generate electricity in Sri Lanka;

      (ii) whether he is aware that so far there is no possibility of using natural gas produced in Sri Lanka for commercial use;

      (iii) if so, the plan the government has for importing and storing liquefied Natural Gas required for generating electricity;

      (iv) if not, whether it is a process of constructing power plants in which electricity is produced out of diesel that the government is doing, in the guise of introducing liquid Natural Gas; and

      (v) if such a risky situation prevails, why doesn’t the government take steps to promote renewable energy?

      (b) If not, why?
