1706/ 2017 - Question Asked By Hon. Vidura Wickramanayaka, M.P.

    1. 1706/’17

      Hon. Vidura Wickramanayaka,— To ask the Minister of Social Empowerment, Welfare and Kandyan Heritage,—

      (a) Is he aware that—

      (i) Rs.1900/= was received monthly by certain low income earners as the Senior Citizen Allowance;

      (ii) this amount was a great help for the low income earners without any other source of income or support from their children, to meet their day to day needs;

      (iii) they appreciated this allowance as a token of gratitude extended to them by the government in their old age?

      (b) Will he admit that—

      (i) during this period when cost of living is escalating, provision of this allowance to certain senior citizens has been stopped;

      (ii) though the parents were entitled to this allowance despite even a single child being in government service provided that child was married and resided at a separate place, payment of this allowance to such persons too has been stopped recently;

      (iii) it is a severe injustice to stop the payment of this allowance to senior citizens who live by themselves?

      (c) Will he inform this House whether steps would be taken to pay the said allowance to senior citizens for whom such payment has been stopped?

      (d) If not, why?
