Hon. Seyed Ali Zahir Moulana,— To ask the Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development,—
(a) Is he aware that—
(i) a project of dredging Batticaloa lagoon closer to the sand Bar had taken place in 1980; and
(ii) this project was stopped half-way due to terrorist activities?
(b) Is he also aware that the outcome of this project will have the following benefits—
(i) there will not be annual closing of the mouth that connects the sea and lagoon;
(ii) lagoon fishermen will have the fishing benefits throughout the year;
(iii) deep sea fishing boats and trawlers will have easy access to lagoon for anchoring;
(iv) paddy fields will not be damaged during floods as the flood water will be quickly drawn to the sea; and
(v) flood water will easily be drawn to the sea minimizing flood relief efforts to be undertaken by the government?
(c) Will he inform this House—
(i) whether action will be taken to re-commence this project; and
(ii) if so, when?
(d) If not, why?
