Hon. Thushara Indunil Amarasena,— To ask the Minister of Rural Economic Affairs,—
(a) Will he inform this House —
(i) whether he is aware of the fact that a new method called the “battery cage” is adopted to rear chickens by some farm owners who engage in the poultry industry at present;
(ii) whether he admits that chickens are subjected to severe cruelty under this method;
(iii) whether steps will be taken to ban the aforementioned method;
(iv) since using the aforementioned method results in an excessive supply of eggs to the market, whether he admits that there is a risk of a price drop in eggs; and
(v) if so, of the steps that will be taken by the Ministry to protect local egg producers and uplift their living conditions?
