      Hon. Mayantha Dissanayake,— To ask the  Minister of Agriculture,—

      (a) Will he inform this House—

      (i) whether he is aware that abandonment of paddy fields in the wet zone has caused reduction in food production as well as environmental issues;

      (ii) what proposals are being implemented for asvaddumizing abandoned paddy fields;

      (iii) what reasons underlie for the quit of farmers from paddy cultivation;

      (iv) what solutions are given for it;

      (v) how many officers are available at regional  and rural level under the Ministry to perform the task of getting paddy cultivation implemented;

      (vi) who those officers are;

      (vii) whether the objective of cultivating of abandoned paddy lands through the recently-established women farmers’ organization comprising twenty women from each village is being achieved;

      (viii) whether there is a course of action in the new agricultural policy to cultivate abandoned paddy fields;

      (ix) whether the objective intended by the recruitment of four graduates per Agrarian Development Centre for making the agricultural policy successful at local level has been achieved; and

      (x) what duties have been assigned to the graduates?

      (b) If not, why?
