Hon. State Minister (Dr.) Sudarshini Fernandopulle said that the Caucus has received a positive response to the proposal made by them that the sittings of Parliament should telecast in sign language on behalf of the hearing-impaired community living in the country. She took this as an opportunity to thank the Hon. Speaker on behalf of the Caucus.
The state minister stated this at a meeting of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus held in Parliament on the (09).
Accordingly, the Committee on Parliamentary Business has agreed to the proposal moved by the Hon. Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to present this Budget Debate in Sign Language. Accordingly, a simultaneous Sign Language interpretation Counter will be telecasted live on the television starting from the 12th of this month, during the Budget debate.
The state minister expressed her confidence that the proposals put forward by the Members of the Caucus regarding educating all citizens of the country about the proceedings of Parliament as well as facilitating access to Parliament for persons with disabilities as a measure of safeguarding democracy in the country will also come to effect.
The importance of establishing day care centers affiliated to all government institutions for the convenience of young parents in the public service was also emphasized. The Parliamentarians were of the view that this would improve the efficiency and quality of government institutions.
The Members of the Caucus also pointed out the need to formulate a mechanism to ensure that women and children are not harmed when enforcing the law on abuse in the country. It was also suggested that the process of recording evidence, especially through video technology, should be streamlined.
Furthermore, the members of the Caucus agreed to conduct an awareness program on reducing the cancer risk and early detection in Sri Lanka conducted by the National Cancer Control Program of the Ministry of Health and to extend an open invitation to all Members of Parliament to do so.
Hon. Members Thalatha Athukorala, Rohini Wijeratne, Geetha Kumarasinghe, Diana Gamage and the Secretary to the Caucus, Deputy Secretary General and Chief of Staff of Parliament Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera were present at this Committee meeting.
