Hon. Buddhika Pathirana,— To ask the Minister of Education,—
(a) Is he aware that—
(i) University Colleges have been recognized as degree awarding institutions under the University of Vocational Technology Act No. 31 of 2008;
(ii) nevertheless three year courses that award only a higher diploma instead of a degree are conducted by these institutions at present;
(iii) these institutions lack the lecture halls, libraries, lecturers and other facilities required to conduct degree courses; and
(iv) the future of the current students and those who completed their education at these institutions is uncertain as a result?
(b) Will he inform this House—
(i) whether action will be taken to address the said issues speedily;
(ii) if so, the amount expected to be spent in that regard; and
(iii) the expected time frame for addressing those issues?
(c) If not, why?
