Hon. K. P. S. Kumarasiri,— To ask the Minister of Agriculture,—
(a) Is he aware that—
(i) obtaining high quality seeds is a major problem faced by farmers engaged in agriculture;
(ii) seeds are sold in the market at exorbitant prices;
(iii) such seeds are not of the proper standard; and
(iv) farmers have been inconvenienced owing to the aforesaid situation?
(b) Will he inform this House—
(i) of the nature of the programmes that have been implemented at present to provide high-quality seeds to farmers;
(ii) whether a programme will be implemented under the sponsorship of the government to provide the seeds that the farmers require;
(iii) whether steps will be taken to fix a control price for seeds;
(iv) whether a programme will be implemented to produce the seeds that Sri Lanka needs in this country itself and to provide them to farmers at low prices; and
(v) whether steps will be taken to upgrade the Agrarian Service Centers as Regional Seed Storage Centres?
(c) If not, why?
