Hon. Hesha Withanage,— To ask the Minister of Education,—
(a) Will he inform this House—
(i) whether he is aware that school children are made to participate in marathon races in an unsafe manner;
(ii) whether the schools have been permitted to conduct such marathon races in major towns during times of heavy traffic congestion;
(iii) if so, of the measures taken by the schools/institutions that obtain such permission, to ensure the safety of the students who participate in such races; and
(iv) whether it is admitted that it is more appropriate to only utilize roads with less traffic congestion, located away from the major cities to conduct marathon races; and
(v) if so, whether steps will be taken to issue the instructions required relevant to this matter to schools?
(b) If not, why?
