      Hon. Tissa Attanayake,— To ask the Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison         Reforms,—

      (a) Will he inform this House of—

      (i) the total number of inmates held in Mahara prison;

      (ii) the number of persons detained as suspects, out of them; and

      (iii) the number of persons held as prisoners?

      (b) Is he aware that —

      (i) the wards “L” and “N” of the Mahara prison are used to detain suspects;

      (ii) there is a high congestion in the aforesaid two wards;

      (iii) the toilet facilities and the drinking water facilities and washing facilities in the aforesaid prison are at a very minimum level; and

      (iv) the inmates of the aforesaid wards undergo severe strain due to the aforesaid circumstances?

      (c) Will he state the measures taken to minimize the congestion in the detention places in the Mahara prison?

      (d) Will he also inform this House—

      (i) of the name of the incumbent superintendent of the Mahara prison;

      (ii) of the total number of employees working in that prison;

      (iii) whether there is any truth of the accusation to the effect that the staff of the Mahara prison along with its superintendent treat the inmates of that prison in an inhuman manner; and

      (iv) if so, the courses of action taken in that regard?

      (e) If not, why?
