Navarathri festival which is widely observed to invoke the blessings of the triple Goddesses, namely Durga, Laxmy and Saraswathy to the mankind with bravery, wealth and wisdom respectively was celebrated in Parliament, this year for the fourteenth time on Wednesday the 10th October 2018.
On account of this, the Parliamentary complex was given a festive outlook in the morning on the 10th October 2018, decorated with ‘Nandhi’ flags, coconut palm leaves and banana trees. Decorated with flower garlands there stood the sacred pictures of the three Goddesses namely the “Durga”, the “Laxmy” and the “Saraswathy” on a specially decorated dais.
With an auspicious start at 9.30 a.m., the event progressed with the playing of traditional music. The special pooja began at 10.00 am with the arrival of the Speaker Hon. Karu Jayasuriya, the Deputy Speaker Hon. Ananda Kumarasiri, the Deputy Chairman of Committees Hon. Selvam Adaikkalanathan, the Leader of the House of Parliament, Hon. Lakshman Kiriella, the Leader of the Opposition Hon. R. Sampanthan, Minister of Resettlement, Rehabilitation, Northern Development & Hindu Religious Affairs Hon. D.M. Swaminathan, Hon. Members of Parliament and Secretary - General of Parliament Mr. Dhammika Dasanayake.
The pooja was conducted by the Priest Siva Shri Ramachandra Kurukkal and the team of Sri Ponnambalawanesvarar Temple, Colombo in an excellent manner. A large number of Parliament staff, the staff of the Ministry of Resettlement, Rehabilitation, Northern Development & Hindu Religious Affairs took part in this event.
After the pooja, the cultural events were performed by students of Mrs. Bavani Kugapriya, Colombo. The dances were highly acclaimed by everyone present and the performance received a standing ovation.
Navarathri Pooja was celebrated island wide on a grand scale in order to foster our cultural values and to pray for the much-needed peace and prosperity for the country.
