Navarathri Festival 2016

Navarathri festival which is widely observed to invoke the blessings of the triple Goddesses, namely Durga, Laxmy and Sareswathy to the mankind with bravery, wealth and wisdom respectively was celebrated in Parliament, this year for the thirteenth time on Tuesday the 4th October 2016.

On account of this, the Parliamentary complex was given a festive outlook in the morning on the 4th October 2016, decorated with ‘Nandhi’ flags, coconut palm leaves and banana trees. Decorated with flower garlands there stood the sacred pictures of the three Goddesses namely the “Durga”, the “Laxmy” and the “Saraswathy” on a specially decorated dais. A large sized special platform was also put up for the cultural events.

With an auspicious start at 09.00 a.m., the event progressed with the playing of traditional music. The special pooja began at 09.30a.m with the arrival of the Speaker Hon. Karu Jayasuriya, Leader of the Opposition Hon. R. Sampanthan, the Deputy Chairman of Committees Hon. Selvam Adaikkalanathan, and Hon. Members of Parliament.

The colourful pooja was conducted by the Priest Siva Shri Ramachandra Kurukkal and the team of Sri Ponnambalawanesvarar Temple, Colombo in an excellent manner. A large number of Parliament staff, the staff of the Ministry of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs took part in this event.

After the pooja, the cultural events were performed by students of Ramanathan Hindu Ladies College, Colombo. The dances were highly acclaimed by everyone present and the performance received a standing ovation.

During the Navarathri days, the Saraswathy Pooja was celebrated on a grand scale in order to foster our cultural values and to pray for the much-needed peace and prosperity for the country.
