Navarathri festival which is widely observed to invoke the blessings of the triple goddesses, namely Durga, Luxmi and Sareswathy who bless the mankind with bravery, wealth and wisdom respectively, celebrated in Parliament, this year for the eleventh time on Thursday the 25th September 2014, with splendour.
On account of this, the Parliamentary complex was given a festive outlook from morning on the 25th September 2014, decorated with ‘Nandhi’ flags, festoons made of coconut palm leaves and banana trees. Decorated with flower garlands there stood the sacred pictures of the three goddesses namely the “Malaimahal” , the “Alaimahal” , and the “Kalaimahal” on a specially decorated dais. A large sized special platform was also put up for the cultural events.
At 10.00 a.m. the event got underway with the auspicious instrumental music played. The special pooja began at 10.00a.m. with the arrival of the Deputy Speaker Hon. Chandima Weerakkody, the Deputy Chairman of Committees Hon. Murugesu Chandrakumr, Hon. Ministers and Hon. Members of Parliament.
The colourful pooja was conducted by the priest of Sri Venkateshwara Maha Vishnu Moorthi Temple, Dehiwela Sivasri K.K.Vytheeswara Kurukkal and team in an excellent manner. A great number of Parliament staff, the staff of the Ministry of Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs and the Department of Hindu Religious and Cultural Affairs took part in this event.
After the pooja the cultural events started which were performed by students of University of Jaffna ( Ramanathan Academy of Fine Arts), Kilinochhi Maha Vidyalayam and Kandy Sathya Sai Kalalayam. The performance received a round of applause from the audience and the dances were highly acclaimed by everyone present.
During the Navarathri days when people worship the Triple Goddesses Durga, Laxmy and Saraswathy who bless the human being with valour, wealth and wisdom respectively, the Navarathri Pooja was celebrated on a grand scale in order to foster our cultural values and to pray for the much-needed peace and prosperity for the country.
