Mr. S. N. Seneviratne

Mr. Nihal Seneviratne was born on May 29, 1934, in Elpitiya and began his schooling at Royal Junior School from 1940 to 1944, and later attended Royal College Colombo from 1945 to 1954 for his secondary education.

He continued his academic journey at the University of Peradeniya, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in 1959. Eager to pursue a career in law, Mr. Nihal enrolled at Law College from 1960 to 1961, where he successfully completed the Advocate Final and was enrolled as an Advocate of the Supreme Court in 1961.

Mr. Seneviratne’s career in the parliamentary arena commenced in June 1961 when he joined Parliament as the Second Clerk Assistant. Over the years, he steadily rose through the ranks, serving as a Clerk Assistant in 1965 before eventually assuming the esteemed position of Secretary General in 1981. He dedicated over three decades of his life to parliamentary service and retired as Secretary General in June 1994.

Throughout his tenure, Mr. Seneviratne’s gained valuable international experience, spending three months each in the House of Commons in Westminster, Ottawa, Canada, and the House of Representatives in Washington.

Following his retirement, Mr. Nihal Seneviratne continued to contribute his expertise to the government in various advisory roles. From 1996 to 1998, he served as an advisor to the then Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake, offering his insights and guidance for two years. Subsequently, from 2004 to 2006, he served as an advisor to Hon. Anura Bandaranaike, the Speaker of the Parliament, for another two years.

Mr. Nihal Seneviratne's illustrious career and dedication to public service have left an enduring legacy in Sri Lanka's parliamentary history. His contributions to the legislative process and his commitment to serving the nation exemplify his remarkable journey of service and leadership.
